What Causes the Empty Box?

When you copy and paste an emoji — or receive one in a chat — and see a blank square, a box with an X, or a question mark inside a diamond, you're looking at a font rendering failure. The device or app does not have a font file that understands that specific Unicode codepoint.

The Unicode Version Mismatch

Emoji are part of the Unicode standard. Every year, Unicode releases a new version with fresh characters (Unicode 15.0 in 2023, Unicode 16.0 in 2024, Unicode 17.0 in 2025). If your operating system, browser, or messaging app was last updated before a particular emoji was approved, it will fall back to a generic "tofu" box — the Unicode term for a missing glyph.

| Emoji | Unicode Version | Your Device Needs | |-------|----------------|-------------------| | 🫨 (Shaking Face) | Unicode 15.0 (2023) | iOS 16.4+, Android 13+ | | 🫨 (Hair Pick) | Unicode 15.0 (2023) | iOS 16.4+, Android 13+ | | 🫠 (Melting Face) | Unicode 15.0 (2023) | iOS 16.4+, Android 13+ | | 🪿 (Goose) | Unicode 15.1 (2023) | iOS 17.4+, Android 14.0+ | | 🫥 (Dotted Face) | Unicode 15.1 (2023) | iOS 17.4+, Android 14.0+ | | 🫆 (Knocked-Back Face) | Unicode 16.0 (2024) | iOS 18.0+, Android 15+ | | 🪭 (Folding Hand Fan) | Unicode 16.0 (2024) | iOS 18.0+, Android 15+ |

Platform Breakdown

iPhone / iPad

Apple bundles emoji fonts with iOS updates. If you're running iOS 16 and someone sends you a Unicode 16.0 emoji (approved late 2024), you'll see a box until you update to iOS 18.

Fix: Settings → General → Software Update → Install the latest iOS.

Android

Google pushes emoji updates through Google Play Services, which usually works without a full OS update. However, some manufacturers (Samsung, Xiaomi) customize the system font and can lag behind.

Fix: Go to Settings → System → Advanced → System update. If that doesn't work, check Settings → Apps → Google Play Services → Update.

Windows / Windows 11

Microsoft historically bundled emoji fonts with major Windows updates, which meant years of delay. Windows 11 now uses a Color Emoji font that updates through the Microsoft Store, but many work devices are locked down.

Fix: Settings → Windows Update → Check for updates. For enterprise users, contact IT about enabling "Segoe UI Emoji" font updates.

How Fallback Fonts Work (And Fail)

Every operating system has a fallback font chain. When a glyph is missing from the primary font, the system walks down the list:

  1. Primary font (e.g., SF Pro on Apple, Roboto on Android)
  2. Emoji font (e.g., "Apple Color Emoji", "Noto Color Emoji")
  3. Generic fallback — if all fonts fail, you get the box/diamond

If the emoji you're trying to use isn't in any font on your system, it gets the fallback box. This is why the same emoji may render fine on one device and break on another.

Quick Fixes You Can Try

  1. Restart your device — a simple reboot sometimes triggers font cache rebuilds.
  2. Copy the emoji from our Emoji Keyboard — our site uses the latest Twemoji artwork served via CDN, so emojis render correctly regardless of your OS version.
  3. Check your app — Discord, Slack, and WhatsApp sometimes pin their own emoji font versions.
  4. Use our Versions page to look up any emoji's Unicode version and see which OS versions support it.

The Bottom Line

The empty box is almost always a font availability problem, not a network issue. Updating your operating system is the permanent fix. In the meantime, tools like our 1-Click Emoji Keyboard bypass the problem entirely by serving emoji as SVG and PNG images from a content delivery network.
